First penned in year 1995 and revised many times over the past 16 years, novelist CHANG Ying-Tai finally presents the readers her never-before-published novel To All the Boys We Loved Before, recounting the experience of being young. Written with the most sincerity, this highly personal coming-of-age story about friendship, first love, and other unspeakable sentiments is infused with love and compassion, evoking an indescribable sense of youth.
How could the girls share about their delicate feelings for the boys back in those days when boys and girls were still attending separate schools, hardly seen walking side by side and interacting publicly? Filled with laughter and tears, this journal of youth follows the events that unfold from grade schools to young adulthood, awakening the memory of that peculiar moment of falling in love for the first time...
DU Hua-Li has gone missing. On her diary SUNG Wei-Ching wrote about the last time she saw DU whose shadow suddenly came back along with the rain and wind, bringing back all the memories from the past...
SUNG Wei-Ching and DU Hua-Li had been knowing each other at grade school ever sine they were 6. DU acted like a bodyguard to SUNG while the latter was like a nanny to the former. A swallow and a crow, the two girls were like a pair of odd couple who managed to share a mutual understanding of each other. There came LIANG Bi-Chuan, a handsome lad of distinctive aura on whom both girls soon laid their eyes...
Several years after, the paths of these three people crossed again. LIANG's family fortune ran out. He lost his mother and sister, counting only on his father who tried to make ends meet as a street vendor. Having an immerse sense of injustice, DU was deemed a trouble maker and was expelled from schools after schools. Having been abruptly abandoned by her father, SUNG and her mother struggled for their independence while living under someone else's roof...While trying their best to find a way out, the lives of LIANG, DU, SUNG came intertwined with those of another 4 people, namely YUAN CHENG-CHIOU, JU Jan-Hua, SHIAU Tsung-Hau, JIANG You-Jiu. Through a series of coincidences and the inevitable, the destinies of these seven protagonists, with each coming from different social backgrounds, collided and converged. Their stories became a love song about youth that was filled with dynamic nuances, resonating with a generation of people who shared with their experiences.
