Recommended Titles from “Book Meets Film” Forum
The 2013 Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE) will once again host the Book Meets Film Forum, continuing the success achieved last year with remarkable results for cross-media adaptations of Chinese-language publications. A total of 132 one-on-one matchmaking meetings were held in 2012, and at present copyright deals have been negotiated for 4 of the 16 recommended books from the first ever Book Meets Film Forum.
In light of the TV and film industry's increasing need for subject material, the 2013 Book Meets Film Forum will extend to two days on January 30 and 31, with the number of recommended books expanded to 25. The TIBE will also invite around one hundred TV/film/online game professionals across the Chinese-speaking world to take part in the forum and hear publishers' proposals. Pitches for recommended books will take place on 30th January (with an estimated 280-plus one-on-one meetings the following day) in a bid to provide a wide diversity of subjects and genres catering to the needs of the TV and film industry. International participants in the forum are expected to include: JCE Movies Limited (JC12), Emperor Motion Pictures (The Bullet Vanishes, The Viral Factor, Let the Bullets Fly), Film Workshop Co., Ltd. (A Simple Life, The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, Detective Dee), Irresistible Films (Cold War, First Time), Tomson Films (Farewell My Concubine, Red Dust), Fox International Productions, and China's Lumiere Pavilions Ltd. and Huayi Brothers Media Corporation. Also participating are more than forty-five Taiwanese TV and film production houses, including: Lee Lieh's One Production Film Co. (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?, Jump Ashin!, Monga), Atom (Starry Starry Night, When a Wolf Falls in Love with a Sheep), Touch of Light Films Ltd. (Touch of the Light), B'in Music International Limited (the production company behind the band Mayday's continued success), Ocean Deep Films (GF*BF, Zoom Hunting), Giee Entertainment Inc. (Din Tao: Leader of the Parade, Night Market Hero), Sanlih E-Television (Inborn Pair, Fated to Love You), Gala Television Corporation (In Time With You, SKIP・BEAT!, Summer Desire), and DaAi TV. In light of the interest shown by Malaysian, Korean, and Japanese film companies, it can be seen that the Book Meets Film Forum has extended its influence beyond Chinese-speaking regions into the whole Asian entertainment market. In order to facilitate the involvement of international participants, this year all reference materials on recommended books will be available in both Chinese and English. It is expected that in the future the matching platform will help promote Taiwanese publications to non-Chinese speaking regions as well.
